BFU Cruise 1995

In July and August 1995 the Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) organized and carried out the research cruise of the Baltic Floating University (BFU). It consisted of three stages — 1) onboard the research vessel, 2) onboard the sailing catamaran and 3) Northern component.

1) International Training through Research Cruise aboard Russian hydrographical research vessel «Nikolay Matusevich» was held on July, 20 — September, 07. This Cruise was held within the framework of UNESCO/IOC Programme TEMA (Training, Education and Mutual Assistance)/TREDMAR «Global University», UNESCO-IOC-HELCOM Project «Baltic Floating University», as well as research programmes of the Ministry of Science and Technologies of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Common and Professional Education of the Russian Federation.

The scientific and student team included teachers and scientific employees from RSHU, Zoological Institute of RAS and students of the Oceanography Department of RSHU, students from Universities of Tallinn (Estonia), Klaipeda (Lithuania), as well as from Ukraine and Peru have been engaged in realization of the Cruise tasks.

The interdisciplinary expedition has been carried out in the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea. Under supervision of the specialists students have taken direct part in taking the samples, have worked in onboard laboratories, getting the experience and practical skills in methods and technique of the marine research, they also have taken part in processing and preliminary analysis of the data.

The Mid-cruise Seminar took place in Helsinki, onboard the vessel during its call to this port on August, 11-13. It was supported by UNESCO, HELCOM and SULA. It was attended by 46 researchers and students from 4 countries (Russia, Canada, Finland and Portugal) as well as by representatives of several NGOs and IGOs.

2) The cruise of the sailing catamaran ORIENTS has been conducted in July — August, 1995 within the framework of IOC/UNESCO «Baltic Floating University» Facility being performed by the RSHU. The research cruise was conducted in coastal waters of the eastern Gulf of Finland — in Luga-Koporye region. The main objective of the cruise was the complex study of the state of the marine ecosystem on the basis of hydrophysical, hydrochemical, hydrobiological characteristics, including the data on sediments state and the level of their pollution and also the level of pollution of the water environment.

3) Northern component — White and Barents seas. This activity consisted of expedition to Palkina Bay on the White Sea (July, 01-17) and expedition to Kislaya Bay on the Barents Sea (July, 21 — August, 05).

The investigations in Kislaya Bay were aimed at developing principles for a complex hydro-meteorological service to assist mariculture affected by the Kislaya Bay Tidal Power Plant. Barents Sea component included the investigation of impact of new fish-farming activities. Both these expeditions were performed by RSHU researchers and students of department of Oceanography.
